2018 FIRST Tech Challenge World Championship Waitlist

I�m excited to share with you that FIRST Tech Challenge will once again invite teams to apply for a waitlist spot for the FIRST World Championship tournament that serves their region! I love that we can share the excitement and the sense of community that this once-in-a-lifetime event provides with even more students. Here�s how it will all work!



We will have a waitlist for both FIRST World Championship Tournaments. Your team can apply for the waitlist if you registered for the season, and if you participated in a FIRST Tech Challenge competition at any level in the FIRST RELIC RECOVERY season.

Each FIRST World Championship Tournament will have about 36 waitlist spots, these spots will be shared between the US Super-Regions and the outside North America countries that participate in FIRST Tech Challenge. 

You can apply for the waitlist through the team dashboard at firstinspires.org starting January 16th at noon, Eastern Time. The waitlist will be open until February 16th at noon, Eastern Time. This is not a first come � first served waitlist. When you apply, your team number is entered into a lottery to fill the waitlist spots for the FIRST World Championship Tournament that serves your region. Your team will receive one lottery entry for each consecutive year that you have been an active team, or for each year since your last advancement to the FIRST World Championship.

Receiving one lottery entry:
                Rookie Teams
                Teams that attended the World Championship in April of 2017
                Inactive Veteran teams that returned in the current season
Receiving two lottery entries:
                Teams that were Rookie Teams in the 2016-2017 Season
                Teams that last attended the World Championship in April of 2016
                Inactive Veteran teams that returned in the 2016-2017 Season
Receiving three lottery entries:
                Teams that were Rookie Teams in the 2015-2016 Season
                Teams that last attended the World Championship in April of 2015
                Inactive Veteran teams that returned in the 2015-2016 Season

This pattern continues with another lottery entry added for each consecutive year a team participated, but did not advance to the World Championship. The maximum number of lottery entries for any team is 10.

There will be two rounds of waitlist drawings. The first round of drawings will take place on March 5th, and the second round of drawings will take place on March 20th. Selected teams will be notified by email on these dates, and will have one week to let FIRST know if they accept or decline the invitation.

FIRST Tech Challenge is excited to partner with AndyMark on Field and Game Elements for the 2014-2015 Season.  That means you no longer have to build a practice field, but can purchase one from AndyMark and have it shipped to you after Kickoff (no Team pre-orders!). They will offer teams a full or half field option and each kit comes with the Field Setup elements and Game Elements. Don't worry, you can still build a field if you want to! But what will they be? Each year, the Game Design Committee drums up a new element that presents a variety of manipulation challenges for teams to overcome. They've chosen wiffle balls, rings, two varieties of racquet balls, hockey pucks and batons, to name a few.  Since elements are different from year to year, teams must redesign their robots each season to accommodate the new item and the scoring objectives.
